Anyone else come across this yet? I suppose there are people who have written sequels to the books, but this makes me wonder about legality. Or is this another idea that's been done before?

Given the length of time that Hardy has been dead, he's no copyright protection and you could print your own versions of Far from the Madding Crowd or turn Under the Greenwood Tree into a rock-opera if you liked.

This is interesting Graham. I can't imagine anyone making "magic realism"

of *A Pair of Blue Eyes*, but who knows? I recently heard from an author

who has just rewritten *The Mayor of Casterbridge* in an Irish setting.

To look on the brighter side of things I suppose this attests to the

strength and endurance of Hardy's plots.

It struck me when the Monty Python team did a skit on The Return of the Native (1970?) that we could sigh a sigh of relief: Hardy had at last made it into the lap of the gods - - - -- along with Shakespeare and the authors of the bible.

"Sequels" are another sign of immortality--as are brewery labels and cigars (Hamlet?). However the ultimate test may be the naming of offspring. The bible is well in the lead here -- all those Sarahs, Davids, Ruths, Johns, Marys and Pauls --- and, if Hardy's Mrs Ball is to be believed, even a Cain! (poor Dickens may have to be patient - I suspect it'll be a while before we encounter an adorable Little Nell on our rounds, let alone a cute little Pecksniff)

Cheers,

RM

I have written two sequels. Weatherbury Farm - a sequel to Far From the

Madding Crowd and The d'Urberville Inheritance, a sequel to Tess. Widely

available on the internet and also in the Dorchester Library permanent

collection.
