H05066 HARDY AND MUSIC CONTINUED 8/1/05 - HARDY FORUM ARCHIVES ____________________________________________________________________________

There are, I know, a number of Forum members who have a keen interest in Hardy
and music. I've just posted on TTHA's Checklist an item that might be of particular
value. In 1945 Carl Weber published a catalogue of music related to Hardy
held in the Colby College, ME, library. That library has a superb collection of
Hardiana. The Weber catalogue was originally published by the Colby Library and
is extremely scarce. Now it has been reprinted by Kessinger Publishing Company
of Whitefish, MT, (2005). Some among the Forum members might be interested in
acquiring a copy.
The publisher's address is PO Box 1404, Whitefish, MT, 59937. The book is also
available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Powells at between $10 and $12.
Just one word of warning. The publisher lists the author as "Webe, Carl J."
when his real name is "Weber." That error may also be continued in the bookstore
lists cited above, so you might have to search for "Webe" rather than "Weber."

And while we're on this topic, we should note that the most recent Hardy Society Journal contains three items related to Hardy and Music:
"Thomas Hardy and 'The Outlandish Knight' by Peter Robson
"Some Thought on Singing the Poems of Thomas Hardy," by Stephen Varcoe
"'Absalom's Place': Gerald Finzi and Thomas Hardy," by Claire Seymour

Shortly after posting a message to the forum about Carl Weber's
book on the Colby College Library's collection, I received a message
from the Ingenta database (one of those regularly consulted for TTHA's
Checklist) which included the following citation:
Orr, Lee. "Writing the Muse: George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Music."
Nineteenth-Century Studies 18 (2004), 183-96.
Just a coincidence, but, again, I know there are members of the Forum who
have a particularly keen interest in Hardy and music.
What may be worth noting is that TTHA's Checklist had already included that
citation for nearly six months.

And, I should add, the Colby College catalogue of Hardy's musical settings can be found via TTHA's LINKS page under "Colby".
http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/Links/linksone/links_to_hardy.htm
When you get to Colby College search not for Carl Weber (you won't find Hardy's music under his name) but for Hardy, Thomas. It's all there!
Best.
