H05043 SHORT STORIES QUERY 5/25/05 - HARDY FORUM ARCHIVES ____________________________________________________________________________

Subject: The Short Stories

I wonder if anyone can help me? I am looking at certain aspects of some of Hardy's short stories. One of features I would like to examine is the extent to which various stories have been anthologised but I am at a loss to know how one might go about assembling the data on a reasonably comprehensive basis: I accept that a complete list might be impossible to compile.

Any suggestions would be received with grateful thanks.

Hi Peter --

The authority on TH's short stories is Martin Ray's Thomas Hardy: A Textual Study of the Short Stories (Ashgate. 1992)

Martin can be reached at

Martin Ray <m.ray@abdn.ac.uk>

Do let us know how you fare?

With every good wish,

In answer to Peter Livesey:

I suspect that the number of antholgies of the short stories is pretty high, worldwide. I have a catalogue produced by the Dorchester Reference Library in 1984 (compiled by Charles Pettit) which lists 20 antholgies of the short stories in English, ten in Japanese, one in French and one in Icelandic. Since 1984 there have been numerous anthologies in English. I have five, and I know there are lots more. If you asked a selection of good bookshops, eg Waterstones, Ottakar's,. Blackwell in Oxford, Heffers in Cambridge for their current stock, you would be able to build up a pretty complete list.

If you would like me to fax you or scan you the Dorset Library list referred to above, I will happily do so, if you will give me your fax number

Peter, I have a very corpulent anthology you may want to add to your list.

It contains "The Three Strangers," "A Tradition of Eighteen Hundred and

Four," "The Melancholy Hussar of the German Legion," "The Withered Arm,"

"The Fellow-Townsmen," "Interlopers at the Knap," and "The Distracted

Preacher." It also contains the novels *Far from the Madding Crowrd,*

*The Mayor of Casterbridge,* *Tess of the d'Urbervilles* and *The

Woodlanders.* It has an introduction by Edward Leeson, and is titled

*Thomas Hardy: 4 Great Novels and 7 Short Stories.* It was published by

Macmillan in 1978. I have found this a great one-volume book to introduce

some of my friends to Hardy's works.

Best Wishes,

Betty Cortus

Many thanks for the helpful responses to my query about the short stories. I have e-mailed Martin Ray and, if I could take up Patrick Tolfree's kind offer to scan the Dorchester Reference Library list he referred to, and e-mail it to me(I am afraid I do not have a fax), I am sure I would find that a help.

Again, thanks for your help.
