Probably joint 3rd with 'Return of the Native' behind Jude and Tess

I find it difficult to 'rate' 'The Mayor of Casterbridge'. I find Henchard

perhaps the most interesting and fascinating of Hardy's male characters,

even more so than Jude. I must admit, though, I have a great fondness for

this novel, perhaps because, as with Tess, the hand of fate is so apparent

here.

Well,

I can't decide between Jude, FFTMC and The Mayor of Casterbridge as the first place. All of these are extremely fascinating novels, and as remarked before, the hand of fate is prevails throughout the plot, and one can't help but feel at least a bit of the powerlessness that the main characters must experience.

I like The Mayor of Casterbridge for its brevity and high degree of

functional cohesion.
