Greetings All:
On behalf of the Directors and Vice Presidents of The Thomas Hardy Association I am pleased to be able to bring you news of "Hardy at Yale" - an international conference planned for June 14-18, 2007.
I am happy to say that we are beginning to see some real progress. Professors Hillis Miller, Gillian Beer and Keith Wilson have accepted an invitation to lecture; Professor William W. Morgan will be conducting a Master Class on the "Emma" poems and Professor Richard Nemesvari will be hosting a Symposium on "Fetishism" (or something equally Nemesvarian -- and Hardyan!). Seminar Leaders thus far include Professors Suzanne Keen, Dennis Taylor, Birgit Plietzsch and Betty Cortus.
The Yale Centre for British Art has most generously agreed to give us use of its auditorium and reception area for a Friday night lecture and buffet supper (we hope to have them mount a special exhibit of Victoriana ) and the Yale Department of English has also offered TTHA use of the Linsley Chittenden facilities for lectures, seminars and other activities. We also plan on asking the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Museum to mount a special exhibition based on the Purdy Collection and the conference will include Literary Luncheons in the President's Room.
Yale Conference Services will manage the logistics of the conference and we will be establishing online registration, under their auspices, in the near future. We will keep you posted on this Forum.
IMPORTANT: This notice is also a Call for Papers. Anyone interested in leading a seminar should submit a draft of their proposed paper to Robert Schweik (Robert Schweik <schweikr@localnet.com>) and/or Betty Cortus (<hardycor@owl.csusm.edu>). Deadline will be May 2006.
We look forward to welcoming you in person at this very special Hardyan celebration.
With every good wish,
Rosemarie Morgan
President, TTHA.

Hell0 again:
Re TTHA Conference at Yale
Just a quickie to clarify-- following some enquiries today:
The Call for Papers is for Seminar Papers. Leading a Seminar means that you present a short research paper for 20-30 minutes and then you field questions and "lead" (or moderate) the discussion.
I hope this helps,
Best,
Rosemarie

Hi Rosemarie -- How wonderful to see information about the Yale Hardy conference, even though it's more than 2 years off!
One question, though: am I correct that you don't anticipate grouping several papers together, with a moderator (the standard format for academic conferences), but that each individual would have a seminar to his or herself? Of course, the latter system allows for more discussion, but fewer papers. I suppose that's a trade-off. I organized a large conference in Philadelphia a few years back, and we had concurrent panels, each with 3 or 4 presenters. It was a bit chaotic, but lots of folks said they enjoyed it.
Anyway, I'm on sabbatical the year before the conference (2006-7), so if you need any help then, please let me know.
Cheers,
Suzanne Flynn

Hi Suzanne -- good to hear from you again! I'll certainly be in touch -- your aid and advice will be invaluable!
Yes-- 2 years off, but we have been given to understand that some folks need many months, not many weeks, to gather funding for conference-attendance and -- of more immediate concern -- the facilities at Yale are at this moment being booked for 2010 (this makes TTHA look almost wambling -- to use a Hardyan word!).
As for "grouping several papers together, with a moderator," TTHA academic committee feels that one Symposium is enough given that we are also hosting a Master Class on the poems which will necessarily involve a moderator and some select contributors. So, Yes! Solo-Chair Seminar Sessions. For example, Suzanne Keen will be leading a seminar on "Hardy and Victorian Psychology," and Dennis Taylor on "Hardy and Religion." Seminar numbers will be limited. Two or three seminars will run concurrently in the afternoons and will require sign-ups at registration.
One thing - TTHA is unanimous: This will not be a MLA-type conference. No multiple sessions. Small-Is-Beautiful? Yep! . We prefer the European-style conference where we'll all participate together in events and discussions -- a shared experience for everyone. The basic principle?: Expert speakers will meet expert audiences (including gestating experts). For four full days we will be "worldclass" together. Yes- with Literary Luncheons and on site choirs! And numbers will most definitely be limited.
Avanti!
Rosemarie
