I am currently researching a PhD on Hardy and the family, and am looking into
the living and working conditions of children in the nineteenth century. I am
having some trouble locating books or articles published (relatively recently)
on this area, my bibliography is both rather small and rather dated at
present! So I am appealing to anyone who has come across any books on this
area, and also any books or articles on Hardy and the family or Hardy and
children in his work, please could you let me know,
many thanks,
Jess Pearce

Dear Jess,
Ralph Elliott's paper, "Bread and Babies" which appears in the TTHA
publication _Human Shows: Essays in Honor of Michael Millgate_, which
appeared in 2000, has some interesting insights into Hardy's attitude
toward children of the working poor, of children in general, and some
information on the young boys and girls who worked in the Hardy household
as servants.
Good luck with your research,
Betty Cortus

I recommend Flora Thompson's excellent trilogy 'Lark Rise to Candleford' for
a brilliant autobiographical account of growing up in rural Oxfordshire in
the 1880s.
Good luck.

I have recently come across a story that Hardy wrote for chidlren, entitled
"The thieves who couldn't help sneezing". I was wondering if any of the group
had come across any other stories that Hardy wrote for chidren. I know of one
other, "Our exploits at West Poley", and should be very interested to know if
there are any more.
best wishes,
Jess Pearce

Not stories Jess, but have you looked at the poems for children that
appeared under Florence Hardy's name in *The Book of Baby Beasts,* * The
Book of Baby Birds,* and *The Book of Baby Pets." It is almost
universally accepted now that these poems were written by TH himself.
These have been collected by Bernard Jones, and were published in a single
volume, *Fifty-Seven Poems by Thomas Hardy* in 2002.
