I am looking for reviews of Hardy's long short story "The Distracted [Young] Preacher," which was serialised in 1879 in the UK in the _New Quarterly Magazine_ and in the US in _Harper's Weekly_.

Does anyone know where I should look for reviews?

Thanks --

Someone brought my wife a lovely bunch of roses yesterday and one she said

was called 'Jude the Obscure' (strange name for a rose). It was raised, I

think, by David Austin roses and they also have a 'Tess of the

D'Urbervilles'.

Is there a list of Thomas Hardy plants of this kind (i.e. named after TH or

his characters/books, rather than plants he mentioned), or anything written

about them?

Indeed, are there any gardens or borders planted with such commemorative

varieties?

Isn't today the day for young maidens to go out and collect St. John's wort?

I have a garden full and my daughter, seeking a suitor, would like to know

what to do with it after she has collected it....

Hello,

I am reading now a very interesing handout: Hardy, Music, and Memory,

which was delivered two years ago by a lecturer who gave a talk on this

topic.

Unfortunately the handout is not signed and I cannot recall the

lecturer's name. I am sure there are participants who remember him well,

could you please send his name to me? I would like to read something

more by him, are you aware of his other works?

Thank you very much for help.

With best wishes,

Marta R.

Marta:

I'm guessing that you are referring to Tim Armstrong's paper "Poetry,

History, and the Sound of Music," which he delivered at the 2002

conference on Friday, August 2. If you are interested in Prof.

Armstrong's other writings you can check out his website, which is

located at http://www2.rhbnc.ac.uk/~uhle012/default.htm.

Hope this helps.

The only relevant listing I can find (in the TH *Journal*) from the 2002 conference is Tim Armstrong, "Poetry, History and the Sound of Music."

Tim Arms trong is at Royal Holloway College, University of London

Hope this helps,

Rosemarie
