Robert Schweik's review had me laughing out loud!
The "learned irrelevance" of Freedman's points (one could hardly bless them
with the word "arguments") is itself a jaw-dropper but Bob's learned
sentience
does much (drily) to alleviate the pain.
Ariela Freedman's is an "outstanding dissertation_ indeed but, as Bob says,
"not in the sense that the Routledge series editor intended." Who, one
wonders,
is the culprit at Routledge? As with the Devereux book there is much in the
Freedman that is barely literate and much more that is purely nonsensical.
But thank you Bob for letting in some air ....
Cheers,
Rosemarie

Subject: Renewed debate on "At A Lunar Eclipse"
Date: May 21, 2004 8:05:24 PM PDT
Forum subscribers may want to know that Bob Schweik and Carolyn McGrath have just renewed a debate about "At a Lunar Eclipse"--the TTHA Poem of the Month for May 2002. They are discussing (1) whether the poem adheres closely to the form of the Italian sonnet by employing a "volta" or "turn" at the beginning of line 9, and (2) whether the closing image of "women fairer than the skies" might be usefully understood to mean something like "women more just, more fair-minded than the skies." It's an intriguing exchange and gives witness to the complexity of this early Hardy sonnet.
The "At a Lunar Eclipse" (May 2002) discussion is available at the POTM website:

Thanks to Carolyn and Bob for renewing the conversation.
best,
Bill Morgan
