Hello,
My name is Patty and I'm new to the list. Does anyone know if there's a collection of film criticism of the adaptations that have been made to date?
For what it's worth, my favorite novel is "Jude the Obscure." I read it during freshman year--over 26 years ago--and have been haunted ever since. I was not altogether crazy about the 90's film version. I took issue with some of the direction--and the screenplay itself. However, I thought the actor who play Jude (Christopher Eccleston [spelling?] with Kate Winslet and Rachel Griffiths as Sue and Arabella, respectively, were spot on in their portrayals.
I look forward to exchanging ideas with you. And it looks like I'm going to have to join up soon to access the Reviews page. Look like great stuff!
Regards,

ello and welcome to TTHA's Forum, Patty!
You've arrived at an opportune moment in Hardy and Film.
First, Cambridge University Press has recently commissioned a book on the subject - I am one contributor among many others who participated in a discussion on Hardy and Film (on the Forum) over a year ago, before the CUP book started to materialise. Terry Wright is the editor.
But of more immediate interest, perhaps, is the Thomas Hardy Conference in Dorchester, UK, in August at which there will be a Film Symposium preceded by screenings of "Hardy" movies throughout the week.
See for info:

Maybe we will have the pleasure of meeting you at the conference?
With every good wish,
Rosemarie Morgan

Hi, Patty,
Welcome to the list!
A book titled Hardy on Screen is now in preparation by Cambridge
University Press and will appear probably some time in 2005.
It's part of a series of "[author] on Screen] volumes CUP is
producing, the first of which, Jane Austen on Screen, has already
appeared. A number of the directors of the Thomas Hardy Association
are contributors to the volume, including a contribution by me in which
I discuss two screen versions of Jude.
There *is* good stuff on the Reviews page, and new reviews appear
regularly. And there's much more, also, of possible interest to you
on the Members Research Resources pages. By all means, join
TTHA!
Best,

I'm a little hesitant to post this, since it could be considered advertising; but here goes. . .
My book, _Seeing Hardy: Film and Television Adaptations of the Fiction of Thomas Hardy_ was published in January 2003 by McFarland & Co. I hope that it might be of some help to anyone looking for information on the Hardy films. . .
