A Hasty and Urgent message from Helen Gibson (there is evidently a rash of

Veneerings in Dorset!)

Dear Rosemarie,

I heard today that there is another ill-conceived planning application in thepipeline. Kingston Maurward College has applied to build a large teachingblock and an accommodation block in front of, and unnecessarily close to, theOld Manor House. I have details, photos and plans and will give moreinformation when I get back on Wednesday. Old Manor House is so muchassociated with Hardy Desperate Remedies, poems, his early childhood. The application is to West Dorset District Council, 58/60 High West Street,Dorchester DT1 1UZ, No: 1/E/04/000116.

As usual, there is a need to get any protests in quickly by April 2nd!

Wish I d known earlier, but only heard today.

Dear Ms Morgan

I joined the online TH community some weeks ago but this is my first missive. I happened to read Helen Gibson's plea and thought I should add my mite to the cause.

I write from far away India. In 1995 I had the pleasure of being a guest at the Gibson residence and the honour of spending a happy hour chatting with James Gibson. (She may remember a research student from Hyderabad in India called John Varghese). But the purpose of this mail is not to be nostalgic...

I wish to earnestly request the concerned authorities to desist from destroying or defacing anything so precious as the Manor House. Its not often that we come across a community (like the TH community) that is sensitive to their heritage, and in the interest of future generations I would go along with Helen and ask the College to adopt a more positive approach thinking of the damage that a new block could do to the entire area.

Best wishes

Sad things happen to gems of our English language when translated by the

foreign literati.

Take for example the following jewel of Ruthenian art:

"The smile on your mouse was the deadles thing"

lifted from

Others will be found-

"Enjoy!"
