Does anyone know the installment breaks for the original serial publication of RETURN OF THE NATIVE in BELGRAVIA magazine? I'm teaching it this spring over a long period (10th-graders) and I thought I'd have the novel arrive to them as it did to Hardy's original readers. I know there were 12, over the course of 1878. If anyone knows, or knows a source, I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks,
John Gould

Try Tony Slade - he edited the first edition for Penguin and should have
records of the history of the text.
Good Luck!

J. Don Vann in *Victorian Novels in Serial* (MLA, 1985) lists the serial breaks, as do, if I remember correctly, the Norton Critical, Oxford World's Classics, and new Penguin editions. I had thought this information was readily available on the Victorian Web, but apparently not.
Part ??Date Chapters in Volume
1. Jan. 1878 ?Book I, Ch. 1-4
2. Feb. 1878 ?Book I, Ch. 5-7
3. March 1878?Book I, Ch. 8-11
4. April 1878?Book II, Ch. 1-5
5. May 1878?Book II, Ch. 6-8
6. June 1878?Book III, Ch. 1-4

a Hardy made numerous revisions in book 3, chapter 8 after serialization.
b Book 4, chapter 1 was revised considerably for the volume edition. (Vann 84)
