This link is from the Echo down in Weymouth.  It leads to an interesting story about Hardy's baptismal

font.  As an aside, because of the paper shortages during WWII the "big book" from several workhouses, including Cerne Abbas were subscribed to the war effort and are lost for genealogists for all time. John Bridell, Minneapolis, MN USA as harrybatt@mn.rr.com

BILL     I don't understand why the hyperlink doesn't work.  The address came to me as an attachment and I didn't want to assault the Association's fire wall. I copied the link >from the URL at the photo's site, then converted it into a hyperlink.  Try this: Copy the link. Go to your home page, hi lite the home page address which appears in the box, delete it, paste in the photo link address, click go and you should arrive at the font.  Please let me know whether that ploy works or not. Evening, John--

Neither this link nor the one you provided in a follow-up email has

taken me successfully to the photo in question. Do you have an alternate

link, maybe a web address? Or can another Forum subscriber tell me what I'm

doing wrong?

Thanks Donna,

You have it!

John, yours isn't a legitimate html address although you may be able to access

the source yourself off your own computer if the jpeg etc is stored there

(that's what it looks like with the Windows address and the suffix being a

jpeg) ) . Unfortunately no one else can access it, though -

C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\8H6RKHIZ\1074932657-13.jpeg

This one-- below- does work-- thanks!

John-- it isn't a "hyperlink." If you go the link provided by Donna and

access

the "Echo" site then open up the data for the image you'll see it has the same

access code as yours (or partly-- only "partly" because your computer has

provided auxilliary digital information and that's what we are getting) . You

presumably stored this "information" on your computer but it is not the url of

the site (as Donna provided it) -- it is not the hyperlink it is the image

data simply. This will not give anyone aside from yourself access to the image

or to the "Echo" itself. A clue-- for the future: Most urls (hyperlinks)

have a

suffix of "htm' or "html" and (if a website) a prefix of "http:// www"

Hope this helps,

Rosemarie

As it happens, Google has cached the story - you can find it on the following:

The link you provide refers to a file that is stored on your local hard drive, i.e. it is not on the Internet. I presume you looked at the original site on the web, and your computer cached this file, i.e. it stored it on your hard drive.

I see that you are using the Internet Explorer 5. Could you please do the following:

1. Connect to the internet

2. Follow the link you provide. This will open the file on your hard drive.

3. Click the Internet Exporer's "Refresh" button. This will lead you to the original web site and will give you the actual URL of the image.

Best wishes

Birgit

Thanks to John Bridell and all the others who finally got me to the correct link for the story on Hardy's baptismal font.  Intriguing bit of detective work combined with 20c history and sentimental lore.  Also enjoyed seeing the picture of some of my Dorset friends.

Now, here's a confession about my computer-mindedness: When I first read John's subject line (reproduced above), I thought of font in the typographical sense and was intrigued with the idea of a dedicated Hardy font.  What would it be?  Not Times New Roman or Wing Dings!  My nomination would be Bookman Old Style.

OK.  Enough frivolity.  Thanks again to those who set me straight about the photo & story link.

Many many years ago when I had much more free time I created a Hardy Truetype font for PC's -- "based" on his handwriting.  Its still available on the web here.

http://pages.ripco.net/~mws/HARDYPC.ZIP

I haven't looked at it or worked on it in years, but I think some characters are not available -- some punctuation perhaps.  Anyway, I offer it again for Hardy font enthusiasts!
