Last night I caught a part of an advertisement for a film version of *The
Mayor of Casterbridge* to be aired sometime this month on A&E, but failed
to get the date(s). Does anyone know when this will take place?
Thanks in anticipation,
Betty Cortus

For interested viewers in the U.S. the A&E production of *The Mayor of
Casterbridge* I spoke of earlier will be aired on August 17. As I have a
habit of muting television advertisements I missed the full details, and
don't know if it will take place over more than one night or not. If
anyone can give us better information I would be most obliged.

Is this the co-production with ITV in the UK that has been held back for
years so that the cost of production didn't have to appear on the
production companies accounts?

Looks like the US is getting it before the UK - I've not seen any news of it
at this end. I spent one day parading in a procession of dignitaries along a
street in Lacock (near Bath) - where photography was "invented" (well, where
Talbot Fox exposed the first extant paper negative of one of the abbey's
windows in 1835 I understand!). And another scene outside a house turned
drinking parlour (if memory after such a long gap serves me correctly!).
Looking forward to seeing it.
I hadn't heard the budget/ accounting story myself. But the producer was
responsible for the TV Tess in the mid 90s.

To learn more about next Sunday's film adaption of *The Mayor of
Casterbridge* on A&E, go to:
AETV.com
There is a brief plot description, biographies of the cast, photos, and a
discussion forum. Nothing too memorable on the latter yet, except one
wisenheimer insisting that the spelling should be CastORbridge.

Not sure it's the British media who have problems with meritocratic
principles so much as the British full stop. I come from Scotland, where a
well-known cultural phrase "I ken't his faither" (I knew his father) sums up
a national culture of implying that the son can't be anything special
either! And I grew up with a longing (shared by a number of friends) to head
out west to Canada for the possibility of doing what one wants to do without
being held back unnecessarily! (Then we heard Canada closed the doors to
us -probably quite sensibly!).
But I am peaked (not peked surely?) that Mayor is out in the US first when
it was shot here by a here company in the first place!
What is the world coming to!

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary definition Michael: Wisenheimer: One who
has the air of knowing all about somthing or everything: wiseacre.

My first guess WAS correct! Thanks Betty - my education has obviously been
lacking. I intend to use the word ASAP!
But, Rosemarie - what means "that the corruption of
Mayors is a staple in the US". Is this a semantic assertion - or have you
previewed the M of C already? Or are you assuming that the producer of Tess
will do similar to the M of C?

Not sure what a "semantic assertion" is Michael but sorry to say I was
being facetious and probably out-of-line all in the same breath (Mayors in
America are not renowned for emulating Mother Teresa!)

That's all!
Cheers,
Rosemarie

Blame it on these Dog Days...
