Dear Hardydans,
Are any of you familiar with Molly Lefebure's book _Thomas Hardy's World:
The Life, Work and Times of the Great Novelist and Poet._ (Knicherbocker
Press, 1997)?
I found a used copy for sale at my local branch library (Oceanside,
California) for $3. I have only had time to glance at the text, but it
seems to be quite a good overview of Hardy's life, accompanying many events
with lines from the poems. It differs from other biographies in that it
has a great deal of interesting material on life in general, contemporary
issues etc., in the nineteenth century.
Where it excels, however, is in its illustrations. It contains a number of
Hardy-related photos I haven't seen before, illustrations from the serial
versions of the novels, photos from films, and many lovely drawings and
paintings. While it doesn't attempt to compete with a scholarly biography
such as Millgate's, it is a beautiful coffee-table book, and would make a
nice introduction for anyone new to Hardy.

Oh, Betty, I can't resist---wouldn't you just love to write a review of it
for the
Revews Page? ;)
Cheers,
Shannon

Hi,
I picked up a copy of this several years ago from a remaindered bookshop in
Bath. It's certainly well illustrated - I remember being struck by the
number of illustrations from the films. I can't remember now if I ever
read the text thoroughly!

And, dear Betty, may I have a full bibliographic citation for inclusion of
that
volume in the "Miscellaneous Earlier Publications" section of the TTHA
Checklist?
