I have read that in the year 1881 TH and his wife attended a ball at Lady
Wimborne's, Canford Manor.
However, elswhere I have read that Sir John and Lady Charlotte Guest bought
Canford Manor in 1846 and that Lady Charlotte died there in 1895.
Canford Manor was, of course, Chene Manor in TH's story Barbara of the House
of Grebe.
Does anyone know how this apparent confusion between Lady Wimbourne and Lady
Charlotte Guest has arisen (perhaps they shared Canford Manor!)

I think I have answered my own question: they did 'share' Canford Manor.
One of Lady Charlotte Guest's sons, Ivor Guest, became the 1st Lord Wimborne
on 30 April 1880 and lived at Canford Manor.
Lady Charlotte, aged 69 in 1881, was still a very active scholar in a
variety of fields and most celebrated as translator of The Mabinogion from
Welsh.
It seems clear that the Hardy's knew Lord and Lady Wimborne, but I would
love to know if TH ever had any significant discussions with the formidable
Lady Charlotte with her enormous knowledge of early British literature and
history.
Is there any information on this point?
There is a good web site of Lady C G here:

I've looked briefly, and there's nothing of substance in the Letters about
her. Ivor Guest (later Viscount Wimborne) visited him, with Lady Grove, as
a young man at (I think) the turn of the century and in "khaki" (off to the
war?) That's about it, unfortunately.
I share your interest in this remarkable woman.
Cheers,
Rosemarie

Thanks for this Rosemarie. It sounds as though the young Ivor Guest you
mention was the son of the 1st Lord Wimborne (also, I think, Ivor Guest) and
therefore the grandson of Lady Charlotte Guest.
