Subject: TTHA Poem(s) of the Month for June

Earlier today, I posted Hardy's "A Backward Spring," "Last Week in
October," and "Shortening Days at the Homestead" as the TTHA Poem(s) of the
Month for June 2003. This discussion will be the sixth in a series
dedicated to a group of Hardy poems, mostly from the 1920's, that seem to
aspire to a kind of camera-like narrative neutrality. I invite your
contributions to an on-line conversation about the poems over the course of
the month.

You can find the TTHA Poem of the Month Discussion by following the
links from the main TTHA page at

http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/Welcome/welcomet.htm

or by going directly to

http://webboard.ilstu.edu/~TTHA_POTM_DISCUSSIONS

Whichever route you take, when you arrive at the Poem of the Month site,
you will encounter a program called WebBoard, which will give you the
opportunity to read the poems as well as any comments they may have
generated, compose a response, preview your response, edit it further if
you wish, and then post it by using the button labeled Post the Message.
If you are composing an intricate or long response, you may want to prepare
your message in a word processing program, then copy it to your clipboard
before pasting it into the message area of WebBoard. And if you prefer,
feel free to send me your contribution as an e-mail, and I will post it for
you:

wwmorgan@ilstu.edu.

Besides this month's discussion and those of January ("Winter Night
in Woodland"), February ("Ice on the Highway"), March ("A Light Snow-Fall
After Frost"), April ("The Sheep-Boy"), and May ("A Sheep Fair" and "Last
Look round St. Martin's Fair"), a full year of conversations in 2002 about
some of Hardy's sonnets are available at the site: April ("Hap"), May ("At
a Lunar Eclipse"), June ("She, to Him, I-IV"), July ("Her Reproach" and
"Her Confession"), August ("To an Actress" and "To an Impersonator of
Rosalind"), September ("In the Old Theatre, Fiesole," "Rome: On the
Palatine," and "Rome: Building a New Street in the Ancient Quarter"),
October ("Embarcation" and "Departure), November ("The Pity of It" and
"Often When Warring"), and December ("We Are Getting to the End" and
"Thoughts from Sophocles").

The discussions of Hardy's memorial and holiday poems from August
2001 ("The Last Signal"), September ("Rome: At the Pyramid of Cestius" and
"Shelley's Skylark"), October ("At a House in Hampstead" and "At Lulworth
Cove a Century Back"), November ("To Shakespeare: After Three Hundred
Years"), December ("Lausanne: In Gibbon's Old Garden" and "George
Meredith"), January 2002 ("A New Year's Eve in War Time"), February ("The
Oxen"), March ("A Drizzling Easter Morning") are also posted at the site
and open for contributions until sometime later in the year when they will
be edited for publication in *The Hardy Review*.

The discussions of poems with female narrators ("The Dark-Eyed
Gentleman," "She At His Funeral," "Her Confession," "Tess's Lament," "The
Pine-Planters," "The Pink Frock," "The Beauty," "I Rose and Went to Rou'tor
Town," "An Upbraiding," "The Chapel-Organist," "A Sunday-Morning Tragedy,"
and "A Trampwoman's Tragedy") have just been published in *The Hardy
Review*, V.

All of the older discussions will remain posted at the site until
such time as they are edited and published in either *The Hardy Review* or
in one of TTHA's Occasional Papers.

The discussions for February, 1998 through November 1999 have been
"closed" and their contents edited and published in *The Hardy Review* [I:1
(July 1998) and 2:1 (Summer 1999)]. Likewise, the conversations from 1999
about the "Emma" poems have been published as the second of the TTHA
Occasional Series. And those concerning "Channel Firing," "Satires of
Circumstance in 15 Glimpses," "After the Visit," "To Meet, or Otherwise,"
and "A Singer Asleep" have been published in *The Hardy Review*, III
(Summer 2000). The discussions of "Nature's Questioning," "The Mother
Mourns," "The Subalterns," "The Lacking Sense," "In a Wood," "To Outer
Nature," "June Leaves and Autumn," "Wagtail and Baby," "On a Midsummer
Eve," "Afterwards," "Shut Out That Moon," "The Last Chrysanthemum," "The
Year's Awakening," and "The Night of the Dance" have been edited and
published in *The Hardy Review*, IV (Summer 2001). All of these
publications are available free or at a discounted price to TTHA members
and may be ordered by others using an on-line form available at the main
TTHA page (see the URL above).

Welcome to the TTHA Poem of the Month Discussion for June 2003.

cheers,

Bill Morgan

Subject: New URL for the Thomas Hardy Poetry Page

Dear members of the list:

Illinois State University, which generously hosts the Thomas Hardy Poetry Page, is about to retire one of its aging servers, so the files that constitute the Poetry Page have been moved to a new address:

The old one will shortly become non-functional. Since the new address is already operational, this is probably a good time to update any links, Netscape Bookmarks, or Internet Explorer Favorites.

This also seems to me a good time to remind users of this listserv of the various divisions of the Hardy Poetry Page:

(1) The Thomas Hardy Poem of the Month Discussions:

(2) Mark Simons's excellent illustrated resource for book collectors, called Collecting Thomas Hardy's Poetry:

(3) Dennis Taylor's even-handed and thoughtful essay comparing the editorial policies of the Gibson and Hynes editions of Hardy's poetry, Authoritative Texts of Hardy's Poetry:

and (4) the division dedicated to Teaching Hardy's poetry:

This last division consists of a questionnaire and database for teachers of Hardy's poetry at all grade levels

and a WebBoard available for teachers wishing to confer about teaching Hardy's poetry:

And of course visitors to the Thomas Hardy Poetry Page can link from it back to the main TTHA Page

from which they can reach all the other TTHA-sponsored pages (novels, drama, short stories, life, etc.) and literally hundreds of other Hardy-related websites described and evaluated on the TTHA Links page:

Subject: Reminder

Dear Hardyans,
As we have a number of new members--welcome to them, by the way--it is time
again to issue a couple of reminders about the Forum.

1: Adding attachments to messages sent to the Forum is not allowed, and
any messages with attachments coming to the Forum are suspect, and should
be deleted immediately.

2: When using the reply function to respond to an earlier message, please
do not include the whole of the earlier message(s). If it is necessary for
clarity just retain the small portion of the earlier message to which you
are actually referring. I am constantly bombarded with returned mail
because of overfilled mailboxes. This is one way we can help to eliminate
this problem.

Many Thanks,
Betty Cortus

Thank you, Martin, for the kind words, but I must protest that all of the
and invaluable research work (which is really the hard part) is Martins and his
efforts should be roundly applauded. Thank *you* Martin!

Subject: Suspect Word

Dear All,
As laughable as it may seem, the filters at some servers are rejecting
postings with the heading given by Jon, Rosemarie, and Bill concerning that
valuable set of books Jon is offering for sale. Apparently it is the word
WES--- that is causing the trouble. I feel a little ridiculous suggesting
this, especially to a group of Hardyans, to whom that word comes to mind
constantly one way or another, if only in reference to Hardy's dog, but
could you please use another heading for further discussions on this matter.

Best Wishes,
Betty

Ahh, the infamous "nanny" feature of software. This very same issue recently
came up on VICTORIA-L, which you might find interesting. There's a definite
point where this pc urge to protect everyone starts to eat away at free speech,
academic freedom, and basic expression.

I don't think Terry Meyers will mind the cross posting, because it helps to bolster his
argument. Apparently someone's software rejected sending a message, quoting
Conrad as using the word "idiot". To foil the software, he had to hyphenate. Below
is Terry Meyers' response and a link to his excellent chronicle of his efforts to be
a Swinburne scholar in a bizarre atmosphere:

[Read "i-diot" without the hyphen. This University has software that
will not permit transmission of forbidden words. Evidently this word
is considered hate speech. Soon perhaps the words will be removed
from the dictionaries here also.]

I thought Virginia took the cake in the category of Silliest
State in the Union --see my trials in trying to work on Swinburne
without any First Amendment rights and without academic freedom, both
done in, and proudly so, by Virginia's legislators:

Subject: Checklist Updates

For those participants in the Forum discussions who are also members
of TTHA, the regular two-week update of the TTHA Checklist of Recent
Hardy Publications will appear on 1 July 2003. If you are not yet a member
of TTHA, this is one of the many reasons to join. Sixteen scholars from
around the world contribute to updating the TTHA Checklist of Recent
Hardy Publications.

The TTHA Checklist is the most up-to-date bibliography on Hardy
available anywhere, and, with its annotations, one of the most
informative. Beginning with the Checklist for 15 July 2003 it will be
even more informative: Checklist items added after the previous
Checklist posting will be identified by triple asterisks *** in order to
make identification of new items easier. Of course the whole Checklist
(2000 to the present) is searchable by author, title, or keyword. And
for Hardy scholarship from 1990 to 1999, Jeannie Smith's bibliography
is available to fill that gap.

For anyone wanting to know about the most recent scholarly comment
on Hardy--including listings of books, parts of books, articles, reviews,
reviews of previously published books, scholarly databases, and even such
matters as letters to the editors of both the Thomas Hardy Journal and the
Hardy Review--the one place to look is the TTHA Checklist--just one part of
the TTHA Members' Research Resources.

For the Checklist team,

Bob Schweik
