Was
looking on Amazon but could only find "A Pair of Blue Eyes" and "The Major of
C." I did find a sequel to Tess - I did not know TH wrote one. What was the
general opinion of the sequel - anyone read it? I would like to find some of
the more obscure novels as well. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks, Janine

On a different topic, Hardy definitely did *not* write a sequel to *Tess of
the d'Urbervilles.* I have seen this "sequel" appear occasionally on eBay,
but I can't comment on it, since I have severe doubts about this kind of
endeavour and therefore haven't read it. My advice would be to give it a
pass and stick with the real thing.

However concerning the sequel
to Tess - I was leary of that one, too. The eBay seller never mentioned TH's
name at all. And the book was quite expensive. Has anyone out there read it
(?) - just curious. Actually I am not big on sequels - I rather prefer
letting my own imagination take over at the end of a book. However, seems the
author has also addressed me later today and that is fine if she felt the
need to continue the story. I respect all choices.
thanks so much, Janine

:
For information on the sequel to Hardy's *Tess* go to the Links page
http://www.fredonia.edu/hardysoc/linksthree/lovers.htm
which also, of course, provides a link to the web page where the
sequel is offered for sale. Of course it's not by Hardy but by
a woman who has also written a sequel to "Far from the Madding
Crowd*.

I am that woman!
Robert is quite correct about the web site but the books are not actually
for sale on the site. However there is much information about the books and
also indicates where they can be purchased.

Ok, another question for Bob S, have you read the sequel to both Tess and
FFMC? Just curious.....Janine

Hi Patricia, Nice to meet you. Thanks for the additional information on your
books. I will check out the website. Can you give us insite as to what
motivated you to write these sequels. I, personally, am curious about them.
It is strange - I have not thought much about what happened to the characters
in both stories after the ending of the books. I reflect often on the stories
but never on the aftermath. Seems I have started a whole discussion group on
the sequels from asking one little question. I am new to the group....please
forgive me.
Thanks, Janine

Hi Janine
A short note to explain what motivated me. I'm continually enthralled (as
I'm sure we all are) by so many of Hardy's characters but it's not
difficult to say why I chose FFMC and Tess to write follow-ups to.
As Gabriel and Bathsheba were newly wed at the end of the novel, it was easy
to imagine their life together afterwards. I was very sad when the novel
ended and was reluctant to let them go, so I wrote down what I imagined
their life together would be like. I didn't start with the idea of
publication but once the story was finished, I had the vague notion that
others might like to read it. On the other hand, the sequel to Tess was
more of a challenge. At the end of Tess' story there is 'the promise' that
Angel and Liza-Lu will marry. I thought 'what if' and my story began.
I have not tried to emulate Hardy in my writings, I admire him too much for
that, but regard the sequels more of a homage to the Great man. Whilst I do
hope others will enjoy reading the sequels as much as I enjoyed writing
them, I do appreciate that many are against the notion of 'sequels'. That
is their prerogative of course and I'm sorry if this short note has
infringed on their time.
The reason the books are expensive lies at the feet of the publishers I'm
afraid. I buy the books, sign them and resell at very little or no profit,
often at less than the 'giant booksellers' on the internet. But that was
not my intention in the beginning so no complaints on my part.
I hope this has gone some little way to explain my motivation and I thank
you for your interest.
Best wishes
Patricia
