Were any of Hardy's poems written specifically for children/ youth? I am currently researching an essay on his writings for children, and although many of his poems are included in children's poetry anthologies my supervisor is only allowing me to write about Hardy's work specifically written for children. I am aware of the "Baby Poems" but are there any others? Bev Lawrence bjl32@cam.ac.uk

Hello - I'm looking for recent (1980s-present) scholarship on William Barnes
- if any Hardy scholars also work with Barnes and know of good sources,
especially articles, I would be grateful to hear of them. I am especially
wondering if Barnes can be considered almost as much of a Romantic poet as a
Victorian? he seems to span the two.
Thanks!

Subject: Hardy Leicester

Dear Sirs,
Some time ago I saw an article referring to Thomas Hardy which contained
his signature. It was very striking that my father's signature was almost
the same, but I have always thought, as the names were similar the likeness
was coincidental.
On Sunday, we had the Antiques Roadshow on the TV, and my attention was
roused when I saw father's handwriting on the screen. A lady had some
writing, which I took to be Hardy's, this was so much like my father's the
similarity was uncanny.
I have always thought that old photographs of Thomas Hardy showed some
'family likeness', but never really thought any more of it.
If the handwriting I saw on Sunday was that of Hardy's, I am beginning to
wonder if there was a family connection in the past.
My father was born in Leicester in 1906, and died in 1992 and there are no
other relatives with whom to discuss the family past.
Do you know if there is any association with the Midlands in Hardy' family
history?- anything you have would be of much interest.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely

Hi, Deborah and Forum:

I'll take a shot at your neglected question about William Barnes but first
I'll introduce myself. My name is Bill Gillard and I have been eavesdropping
on the list for a few months now and have followed the discussion avidly. I
have come to Hardy indirectly, though his WWI poetry and then back into
prose. Thanks for the free education, everyone.

I know you probably have done this already, Deborah, but a jaunt through the
MLA bibliography and another couple databases revealed two citations that
might be useful. Although not quite directly, they look like they may be
appropriate to your research.

TI: Exile in Eden: William Barnes's Lyrics of Romantic Encounter
AU: Hertz,-Alan
SO: University-of-Toronto-Quarterly:-A-Canadian-Journal-of-the-Humanities
(UTQ). ON Canada. 1986-1987 Winter; 56(2): 308-318.
This article places Barnes in the "Dutch School," along with a group of
artists known for thei technical sophistication, modest subject, and restful
tone." I am not sure how this translates across the Victorian/Romantic divide
for you but the article is worth a look. I found it full-text through
Academic Search Premier.

TI: Thomas Hardy, William Barnes and the Question of Literary Influence
AU: Siemens,-Lloyd
SO: Victorian-Review:-The-Journal-of-the-Victorian-Studies-Association-of-
Western-Canada-and-the-Victorian-Studies-Associa (VRev). AB, Canada. 1993
Summer; 19(1): 43-48.
I haven't seen this one full-text but if you can find it it may say a bit
about how Barnes's poetry transcended his own time.

Good luck. (Who knows, maybe Siemens or Hertz reads this list and can help
both of us head in the right direction.) In any case, please let me know what
else you have been able to turn up. I, too, am fascinated by these kinds of
transitions in culture. I have done some work with William Carlos Williams
and he is a poet who, on the surface, is thoroughly modern but shares with pre-
mods a deep faith in the power of words to apprehend the physical world.
(ideas=things?) Paterson vividly shows this tension. Just a thought. Good
luck with Barnes.

Bill Gillard
