I've just received a beautiful (limited) edition of Arthur Symons *A Study of
Thomas Hardy* (London: Chas. J Sawyer, Ltd, 1927) -- a contribution to The
Thomas Hardy Association Collection of Early Hardy Criticism by TTHA member,
Robert K. Bennett.
The frontispiece features a portrait of Hardy by Alvin Coburn - a portrait
I've never set eyes on before. And the pages are hand-cut. What a treat!
On behalf of Bill Morgan and TTHA Board of Directors I'd like to thank Robert
Bennet for his delightful and most generous gift.
I can see it's going to be quite quite painful letting go these lovely
books on
inaugural day. I shall certainly relish them in the meantime.
I've made an entry for this book at:
http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/Welcome/COLLECTION.htm
But I've incorrectly typed the title in as *Thomas Hardy.* Next time I'm
uploading I'll correct it.
Cheers,
Rosemarie.

Greetings All -- on this lovely "thyme-scented, bird-singing" Spring
morning --- which brings with it the good news that Jim Gibson has found a
copy of Annie Macdonells book on Hardy and will be donating it to the
Collection.
Only two weeks to go before the inauguration of The Thomas Hardy
Association Collection of Early Hardy Criticism at Milner Library in Illinois.
I hope you are all hunting through your bookshelves to see if you have
anything you can give!
The archives for this project can be found at:
http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/Welcome/COLLECTION.htm
With every good wish to you all and, on behalf of Bill and TTHA, grateful
thanks to Jim for his generous gift.
Cheers,
Rosemarie

Greetings all:
Yesterday David Cosgrove, bibliophile extraordinaire, made his formal
presentation, to TTHA, of Brennecke's *Life and Art by Thomas Hardy* -- the
event took place at the Beinecke Library, Yale University. You may recall
that it was David who set the TTHACEHC in motion by offering TTHA this rare
and wonderful book: it was published in 1925 in a limited edition of 1000
copies. Most of the pages of this book are hand cut but some remain uncut
and the paper jacket is still largely intact though brittle and faded.
Photographers were present at this occasion and when I have assembled an
album of snapshots of the inaugural session in Illinois I'll post it on the
following page, which holds a listing of this Collection:
http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/Welcome/COLLECTION.htm
On behalf of Bill Morgan, Steve Meckstroth and the Hardy Association I
would like to extend to David our sincerest thanks for this wonderful gift
which will shortly be wending its way from New Haven to Illinois in company
with almost 30 others -- so generously donated by yourselves to this great
cause.
Blessings,
With every good wish,
Rosemarie

Subject: The Inauguration of the TTHA Collection--News from Normal
Dear Forum readers,
We are having a glass of wine here in Bill's study, having just come back
from the cordial ceremony inaugurating the TTHA Collection of Early Hardy
Criticism here at Illinois State University. About 35 people, including a
reporter and photographer, were present. Everyone was excited and
enthusiastic about receiving the first 30 books in what we hope will become
over time a major Hardy scholarly resource. Rosemarie and Bill outlined
the purpose of the Collection and gave something of the history of its
inception. The Dean of the University Libraries, Cheryl Elzy, spoke about
the importance of books in the modern, high-tech library, and thanked the
Association for its generosity. Then representatives of the University and
TTHA signed the official letters of agreement, making the Collection a
reality. After the official ceremony, Rosemarie and Bill toured the
facilities in the Special Collection area of Milner library and were shown
the space, large enough for about 300 books, which has been reserved for
the TTHA Collection.
Rosemarie will post some photos from the event at the TTHA main site when
she returns home. Meanwhile, keep the Collection in mind when you're
looking around in used book shops. This is a long-term commitment.
cheers,
Bill & Rosemarie
