HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE HO2075 11/27/02 "FIRST EDITION OF HARDY'S WORKS QUESTION" ============================================================================ From: "Eric Huffey" Subject: Re: Hello Hello and welcome, Eric-- If you're interested in learning about and acquiring first editions of Hardy's poetry, I'd suggest you vist Mark Simons's admirable guide to collecting Hardy's poetry at http://pages.ripco.net/~mws/collect/Collect.html In fact, a good deal of what Mark has to say there will also be useful to those who may want to collect Hardy's fiction as well. And if you have questions about specific first editions and collectible Hardy books, you will usually get a reliable answer from someone on the Forum. Again, welcome, and happy collecting. cheers, Bill Morgan Director, Hardy Poetry Page ========== Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 15:32:37 -0500 From: Rosemarie Morgan Subject: Re: Hello Eric-- do you want collectibles or just plain old First Editions? If the latter, Penguin World Classics 2000 has been bringing out First Eds in paperback of all the novels. The series started in the late 1990s and I believe it's now complete. best, Rosemarie ========== Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 15:11:33 -0600 From: Bill Morgan Subject: Re: Hello Eric, Me again, this time piggy-backing on Rosemarie's message below. If you do in fact want information on the various collectible editions of Hardy's novels (rather than a modern edition that allows you to read the text of the first edition), then by all means visit Birgit Plietzsch's extraordinarily impressive Novels Page at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~ttha/ where you will find a wealth of information about hundreds of (mostly older) editions of Hardy's novels. My apologies to Birgit for not mentioning the Novels Page in my first posting. Happy hunting. cheers, Bill Morgan ========== From: "Eric Huffey" Subject: Re: Hello Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 16:48:52 -0800 Thank you all for your replies - I am looking for collectibles I guess, i.e. when they were written. I wish to purchase 1st editions of his books Eric Huffey ========== Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 20:56:46 -0500 From: Rosemarie Morgan Subject: Re: Hello Sorry to say, Eric, that this is not a first edition. The first edition of *The Return of the Native* was published in three volumes by Smith, Elder & Co in 1878. The 1895 edition is a revised edition published by Osgood, McIlvaine & Co. A first edition isn't known as such by virtue of being the first edition published by a specific publisher. If this were so there would be many "first editions." There is only one such: it is the first published volume edition (as opposed to the serialised version or the manuscript version or any later revised editions). I hope this isn't too confusing. Happy Thanksgiving! Rosemarie . I have seen 1895 publications of Return >of the Native, for instance, advertised as first editions. Do I gather this >is legit, if it is the first edition by that publisher? > >Eric ========== From: "Eric Huffey" Subject: Re: Hello Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 17:51:40 -0800 : > Sorry to say, Eric, that this is not a first edition. It seems there was also one by Harpers in 1895. A 'confirmed first edition' ! I guess I keep looking! Thanks for your help Eric ==========
