HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE HO2050 8/18/02"HARDYAN INFLUENCES ON HARRY POTTER" ====================================================================== Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 17:39:32 +0100 From: Birgit Plietzsch Subject: Hardyan influences on Harry Potter? To catch up with the world of my students I have recently been reading _Harry Potter_ and came across characters like the wizard Albus Dumbledore, the keeper Hagrid and the student Cedric Diggory. I am not aware of anybody but Hardy (and maybe Barnes) using the words "dumbledore" and "hagrid" in their writing and have been wondering whether Hardy's fiction could have been the source of Rowling's usage. Am I overlooking other sources? Best wishes Birgit ========== From: "Martin Hemming" Subject: Re: Hardyan influences on Harry Potter? The conception of being "hag rid" is certainly present in English folklore in general. I have a copy of "Dunstable its history and surroundings" by a chap called Worthington-Smith, written c. 1900, and this refers to "night hags", some kind of fairy/demon which were supposed to ride horses (or even people) across the fields at night. rgds Gary Alderson ==========
