HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE HO2030 5/1/02 "MAY 2002 ANNOUNCEMENTS" ========================================================== Date: Wed, 01 May 2002 17:08:00 -0500 From: Bill Morgan Subject: TTHA Poem of the Month for May Earlier today, I posted Hardy's "At a Lunar Eclipse" as the TTHA Poem of the Month for May 2002. This month's discussion will be the second in a series dedicated to Hardy's sonnets. I invite your contributions to a month-long on-line conversation about one of Hardy's earliest works in the sonnet form. You can find the TTHA Poem of the Month Discussion by following the links from the main TTHA page at http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/Welcome/welcomet.htm or by going directly to http://webboard.ilstu.edu/~TTHA_POTM_DISCUSSIONS Whichever route you take, when you arrive at the Poem of the Month site, you will encounter a program called WebBoard, which will give you the opportunity to read the poem as well as any comments it may have generated, compose a response, preview your response, edit it further if you wish, and then post it by using the button labeled Post the Message. If you are composing an intricate or long response, you may want to prepare your message in a word processing program, then copy it to your clipboard before pasting it into the message area of WebBoard. And if you prefer, feel free to send me your contribution as an e-mail, and I will post it for you: wwmorgan@ilstu.edu. At the present time, this month's discussion and those for January ("A New Year's Eve in War Time"), February ("The Oxen"), and March ("A Drizzling Easter Morning") are the only recent ones available at the site. I have begun, however, to reconstruct the earlier discussions of poems with female narrators ("The Dark-Eyed Gentleman," "She At His Funeral," "Her Confession," "Tess's Lament," "The Pine-Planters," "The Pink Frock," "The Beauty," "I Rose and Went to Rou'tor Town," "An Upbraiding," "The Chapel-Organist," "A Sunday-Morning Tragedy," and "A Trampwoman's Tragedy") and hope to have them posted shortly. I have finished reconstructing and have re-posted those concerning Hardy's memorial poems ("The Last Signal," "Rome: At the Pyramid of Cestius near the Graves of Shelley and Keats," "Shelley's Skylark," "At a House in Hampstead," "At Lulworth Cove a Century Back," and "To Shakespeare After Three Hundred Years"). All of the older discussions will remain posted at the site until such time as they are edited and published in either *The Hardy Review* or in one of TTHA's Occasional Papers. The discussions for February, 1998 through November 1999 have been "closed" and their contents edited and published in *The Hardy Review* [I:1 (July 1998) and 2:1 (Summer 1999)]. Likewise, the conversations from 1999 about the "Emma" poems have been published as the second of the TTHA Occasional Series. And those concerning "Channel Firing," "Satires of Circumstance in 15 Glimpses," "After the Visit," "To Meet, or Otherwise," and "A Singer Asleep" have been published in *The Hardy Review*, III (Summer 2000). The discussions of "Nature's Questioning," "The Mother Mourns," "The Subalterns," "The Lacking Sense," "In a Wood," "To Outer Nature," "June Leaves and Autumn," "Wagtail and Baby," "On a Midsummer Eve," "Afterwards," "Shut Out That Moon," "The Last Chrysanthemum," "The Year's Awakening," and "The Night of the Dance" have been edited and published in *The Hardy Review*, IV (Summer 2001). All of these publications are available free or at a discounted price to TTHA members and may be ordered by others using an on-line form available at the main TTHA page (see the URL above). Welcome to the TTHA Poem of the Month Discussion for May 2002. cheers, Bill Morgan ========== Date: Tue, 7 May 2002 18:52:55 -0700 From: Betty Cortus Subject: Spam and Virus Problems on HARDY-L Dear Members, We have been inundated with spam and untitled attachments probably containing viruses. Our fire wall at Cal State U catches most of these problem messagse, but some may/will slip through to the list. DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS COMING TO HARDY-L. They are probably infected. I would appreciate your letting me know if you have been receiving suspicious mail from the list. Please write to me at home at . I regret this disruption to our usually benign Discussion group. Betty Cortus ========== Date: Wed, 8 May 2002 08:13:27 -0700 From: Betty Cortus Subject: VIRUS ATTACK Dear Members, Thanks to all of you who responded to my message about our recent virus attack. Our TTHA technically savvy Directors, Seth Lacherman and Birgit Plietzsch, have identified it as a variant of the Klez virus which can do despicable things to our computers and software. Garrett Collins our Server liaison informed me yesterday that Cal. State U. San Marcos has recently installed a new upgraded fire-wall. In the meantime: DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS COMING TO HARDY-L. DELETE THEM IMMEDIATELY!!! As I wrote to you several days ago there is a virus which seems capable of slipping through even our new up-gradednew fire wall. PLEASE DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS COMING TO THE FORUM!!! I am repeating the advice we had from Birgit Plietzsch at that time. Betty Cortus ========== From: "Gary Alderson" Subject: Re: Virus? Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 23:34:11 +0100 I didn't open it, it opened. Unsafe I think -- my antivirus snuffed it out so I would think it's viral? RM ========== Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 16:29:02 -0700 From: Betty and/or John Cortus Subject: VIRUS Dear Members, i just talked with with Garrett Collins, our technical contact at CSUSM, and he again assures me that our list serve is proteced and that the virus is stopped at their fire-wall. It is possible that one or more of the HARDY-L subscribers have been effected by the virus, and this clever virus uses those subscriber Address Lists as a source for messages going out that do not go out via the List, but may look that way. Again, never open any Attachments on any messages unless you know beforehand that it is from a friend or source who has informed you that they are e-mailing a message with an Attachment of a certain name. Also double delete all these messges with Attachments which usually shows up with a Attachment Icon or Paperclip.. First from your Incoming Message File, and then from your Trash file, or similar file, if you have one. CSUSM does not believe that they have the virus in their system. So it must be coming from somewhere else, by-passing the LIST. Please be very careful in opening all your messages. If it looks crazy, do not even open the message and delete it from your incoming and trash files without opening it. In some cases the virus even opens itself into you e-mail address book when you open the message. Please inform me at hardycor@owl.csusm.edu if you get any of these strange messages, which you can generally identify by their strange From: names and Subject: titles. Sorry about all the troubles. We will stay on top of this. Betty Cortus ========== Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 23:53:18 +0100 To: Gary.Alderson@btinternet.com From: Birgit Plietzsch Subject: Virus Cc: Betty and/or John Cortus Dear Garry I have looked at the html-source of the message in question. There is some hidden html (iframe) which does not show up in numerous email clients. The fact that this html exists, indicates that this message contains a virus, though I do not appear to have received the attachments you mention (2 I take it from your message?). The various variants of the klez virus use iframe, among others viruses. My suspicion that it could be klez is also supported by the fact that there were 2 attachements, one would have been infected by the virus, and klez.h is also capable of taking one file at random from the originating computer and to attach it to the message it sends. From what you are saying, one of the attachments opened automatically, which is bad news. Klez is under certain circumstances capable of launching itself, i.e. opening the infected file without you doing anything. This can happen with Outlook Experss 5.x. There is a security loophole in this mail client which has more than once been used by viruses to infect PCs. (Microsoft offer a fix for that which is downloadable from their website.) Another thing that is striking is that the email address of the sender is not identical with that of the originating ISP, which is another indication that this message has been infected with the klez virus. Klez is able to forge email addresses, which means that the person who appears to have been the sender of this message is likely NOT to have send it. I would strongly recommend that you run a full system virus scan on your PC. For this, of course, you need to have uptodate AntiVirus software installed on your machine. As klez is able to spread across networks and can send itself without an email client it is also advisable that you stay offline with the computer that launched the attachment till you have established wether you are infected and, if so, till the problem has been resolved. If you have further questions about this, please do not hesitate to get back to me privately, not over the list. With best wishes Birgit Plietzsch (TTHA Internet Advisor) ========== Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 00:06:56 +0100 From: Birgit Plietzsch Subject: Re: Virus? As a rule of thumb it is not advisable to open any attachment unless you know the sender has send it to you intentionally. Though I personally did not receive any of the attachments mentioned, I had a look at the html-source of the message in question, and this contains two indications that this is another klez virus that has found its way to the list. The first indication is that the domain of sender's email address is not identical with the domain of the outgoing ISP, and the second indication is that the html-source uses iframe. Klez is able to forge email addresses which could explain the two different domains. Furthermore some viruses are known to use iframe. The third clue is the 2 attachments Garry mentions. Klez.h (a variety of the virus) sends itself out in one infected file and often randomly attaches a second file from the hard drive of the originating PC. Hope this helps Birgit ========== Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 20:24:51 -0700 From: Betty Cortus Subject: Virus information websites Herewith the e-mail received from CSUSM.
