Dear all,

I'm writing a chapter on Hardy and bioregionalism and I was 
wondering if any of you knows a good study on Hardy and the 
city. In my chapter I want to argue that Hardy, in spite of 
his status as a regional/rural novelist, does not turn 
against the city per se but incorporates it into his global 
vision. Do you know of any such studies on Hardy and the 
city? Any help gratefully accepted.

Martin,

The majority of work on Hardy and the city depend on the binary opposites of
town and country.  There is one exception that I can think of at the moment,
however, which is Richard Kerridge's "Maps for Tourists" in L Coupe's _The
Green Studies Reader: From Romanticism to Ecocriticism_ (Routledge 2000).
Although it doesn't specifically deal with Hardy and the city, it may spark
some ideas for you.
