    I have just read a book by Jonathan Bate (2000)  called 'The Song of the Earth' (Picador, London) described in the blurb as 'the  first ecological reading of English literature'.  (Bate is a professor of  English literature at the University of Liverpool and a respected figure in  UK.)   His first chapter has an interesting 10 page  section on Thomas Hardy which subscribers who have not come across it already  might be interested to read.   Patrick Roper
