HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H02015 2/12/02 "NAME LUXELLIAN IN PBE" ========================================================== From: "Gary Alderson" Subject: When I set out for Lyonesse Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 22:49:24 -0000 When I set out for Lyonesse (three hundred miles away, in our case...) I drove through a village called "Luxulyan". Any relation to the Lord (Luxellian) in "A pair of Blue Eyes", do you think? I'd never thought of the link before, but being in Cornwall I was of course reading the novel, and noticed the link... ========== From: "Patrick Roper" Subject: Re: When I set out for Lyonesse Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 16:04:07 -0000 Hardy was certainly aware of Luxulyan and, as you may have noted, it is at the southern end of the Luxulyan valley. According to Kenneth Phelps (1975) in 'The Wormwood Cup: Thomas Hardy in Cornwall': "From Kirland, Hardy and Emma explored the country on the edge of Bodmin Moor, visiting the Luxulyan valley. One such walk is recorded in a poem which was, as Hardy stated later, one of his favourites." The poem is 'Near Lanivet, 1872' from Moments of Vision. The word 'Luxulyan' has had many variant spellings and TH may just have been using one of this. Others I am sure know far more than I.
