HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H02014 2/11/02 "DYNASTS QUOTE IDENTIFIED" ============================================================= Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 09:14:49 -0800 From: Betty Cortus Subject: QUOTE IDENTIFICATION Dear Members, I have been asked by an editor to identify the following quote, for which he needs documentation. I have checked Martin's Concordance and it isn't in the poems. It sounds a lot like _The Dynasts_ to me. I would be very grateful if one of my knowlegeable friends could locate it for me: "A dreaming, dumb thing, that turns the handle of this idle show." Many Thanks, Betty Cortus ========== Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 09:47:12 -0800 From: Betty Cortus Subject: Re: QUOTE IDENTIFICATION : Sorry, That should have been: "A dreaming, dark, dumb thing that turns the handle of this idle show." Wilson" Subject: Re: QUOTE IDENTIFICATION Dear Betty, It's the Spirit Ironic, _The Dynasts,_ After Scene of Part Third (p. 705 in the standard Macmillan edition). The full context reads: For one I cannot answer. But I know 'Tis handsome of our Pities so to sing The praises of the dreaming, dark, dumb Thing That turns the handle of this idle Show!
