HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H02009 2/3/02 "D'URBERVILLE PORTRAITS LOCATION" ================================================================== Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 15:45:40 -0500 From: Thomas Law <114603.13@compuserve.com> Subject: D'Urberville Portraits Hello First posting and a request for information. I am directing a production of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES in London, playing in March and April. I have seen photographs of the actual portraits which lour at 'Wellbridge Manor', but cannot now remember or trace where. Does anyone know where I can find them again. The more locations the better as we may have problems sourcing the books and/or getting copies. Thanks Duncan Law 114603.13@compuserve.com or 020 8678 6617 ========== Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2002 18:48:29 +0100 Subject: Re : D'Urberville Portraits From: "Eric Christen" If I am not mistaken, the portraits of Julia and Frances Turberville are on the walls of the staircase at Woolbridge Manor. But they are very badly faded; indeed, they have almost disappeared and really can't be viewed with any profit. The best preproductions are in the Dorset County Museum. I think I'm right in remembering that they were made by Mary Hardy, but I'm not sure about that. I've had a quick look around among my books, and the only reproductions I can lay my hands on right now are to be found on p. 133 of Timothy O'Sullivan's *Thomas Hardy: An Illustrated Biography* (London: Macmillan, 1975). Hope this helps. cheers, Bill Morgan ==========
