HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H02002 1/1/02 "HARDY'S WRITING TECHNIQUE QUESTION" ====================================================================== From: "J Manc" : Subject: technique in Hardy Date: Tue, 01 Jan 2002 21:49:41 +0000 Does anybody know a good article (on the internet if possible) about Hardy's technique to write a novel? What is typical for Hardy's writing technique (for novels) or what are the most common features of his novel structures? Thanks a lot. Happy web surfing, P. V. Allingham ==========. Date: Thu, 03 Jan 2002 00:36:23 -0500 From: Rosemarie Morgan Subject: Re: technique in Hardy A little late on the scene here but I doubt there's anything better, as an introduction to Hardy-the-Writer, than James Gibson's *Thomas Hardy: A Literary Life* (Macmillan Press Ltd, 1996). It's not an "article" of course. But no introduction to Hardy's "technique" or to the "common features of his novel structures," is/are going to be found in an article. Nor will the cited downloadable items from the internet do the trick. Not even close. The virtue of a printed book, and in particular this kind of book (if James Gibson will forgive my suggesting his work might be one-of-a-kind) -- "this kind of book" which is highly readable, superbly well-informed and (not-to-be-sniffed-at) produced in paperback, will *live* with you -- beside, or in, your bed/computer/bath-tub/sports kitbag/kitchen-sink -- you name it! And you will never regret it! Cheers, Rosemarie ========== Subject: RE: technique in Hardy Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2002 14:51:37 -0500 From: "Suzanne Flynn" Is it true that James Gibson's literary biography of Hardy is available in paperback? I haven't been able to find it at any of the on-line book-sellers except in a hardcover edition. Not that one wouldn't be interested in spending the extra dollars (or pounds) for the hardcover, but my students might be interested in the book if they could purchase it for less. If anyone owns the paperback copy, perhaps he or she could post the ISBN number. Thanks very much. I paid 10 pounds 99 P for it at Ottaker's in Dorchester in 1998. The following information may help. The so-called second edition of The Complete Poems (ISBN 0-333-94929-3) was published about a month ago in England and I am told that stock is on its way to USA. The covers of both hard-back and paperback have been changed - for the worse. The paperback is still £12.99, the hard-back has gone up to £35. Didn't Hardy say something in his will about having them available 'at a reasonable price so as to be within reach of poorer readers'? Palgrave is at present having a book-sale which lasts until 31 March. Among the books for sale are my *Thomas Hardy: Interviews and Recollections* (ISBN No. 0-333-24788-4), paperback at £9.99 and Timothy Hands' *Thomas Hardy* (Writers in their Time series) ISBN 0-333-54999-6 at £9.99. I am told that they still have stock of my *Thomas Hardy: A Literary Life* (ISBN 0-333-43831) in paperback, last known price £12.99. There is a small stock of the Variorum edition of *Complete Poems* at £97.50. Believe it or not, the Variorum began life in 1979 at £30. Sadly, commercial greed and lack of vision are killing the world of academic books. Best wishes, James Gibson ==========
