HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H01098 12/6/01 "RETURN OF THE NATIVE-COPYRIGHT QUESTION" ============================================================================ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 11:21:25 -0500 From: Rosemarie Morgan Subject: Re:Calling for Advice on RN copyright Can anyone advise on copyright as per the letter below? ____________ From: Megan Bell To: rm82@pantheon.yale.edu Subject: Hardy inquiry Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2001 15:55:00 GMT Dear Prof Morgan, I am the Assistant Director for a new program at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill called, knowledgeWorks. Its purpose is to work with UNC-CH faculty to create interactive media that enhances information usually found in a textbook - the program is working on 2 pilot "mediabooks" that combine multimedia and text information. One of the mediabooks we have begun is based in our English department and compares the work of Thomas Hardy, J.M. Turner and Richard Wagner. I was very impressed by the Thomas Hardy Association's work and information on the TTHA website; it is clear that TTHA is a true collection of experts and professionals. As part of our project, I am researching to determine if "Return of the Native" is currently under copyright to anyone. Would anyone in TTHA know that information or be able to direct me to a source that could confirm it? Any help and guidance would be very appreciated. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon. Megan R. As Hardy died in 1928 copyright ran out in 1998. I looked into this when I wrote the sequels to FFMC and Tess and discovered although it used to be 50 years it is now 70 years. I have been compiling a reference work on Hardy for two years (Thomas Hardy A to Z, in the Facts on File literary A to Z series), and agree with Patricia Mann that the novels are now in the public domain. I would like to ask some further questions about the knowledgeWorks project, off-list, if you could give me your e-mail address. Many thanks. Sarah Bird Wright Sarah Bird Wright 3505 Old Gun Rd. E.
