HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H01085 10/20/01 "SERIALIZATION OF TD QUESTION" ================================================================== From: "Martin Ball" Subject: The serialisation of Tess Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 11:34:12 +0000 I am currently studying Tess as a set text for my English Literature A level. Whilst in class discussion the point was raised as to at what points in the novel it was broken up for serialisation, with no one entirely sure as to how to find this information. Having scoured the internet I have had no joy, and it would be very much appreciated if anyone could enlighten us as to how to gain the information. Many Thanks Martin Ball martinball_1984@hotmail.com ========== Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 13:31:39 +0100 From: Birgit Plietzsch Subject: Re: The serialisation of Tess _Tess_ was serialised in weekly instalments in the _Graphic_. Instalments appeared between 4 July and 26 December 1891. In _Thomas Hardy: A Bibliographical Study_ Purdy provides the following details (pp. 68-69): 4 July, Chaps. 1-3 11 July [no instalment] 18 July, Chaps 3 (cont.)-6 (chap 5 in book publications; numbers in brackets refer to chapter numbers in book publications) 25 July, Chaps 6 (5) (cont.)-8 (7) 1 August, Chaps 9 (8) - 11 (12) 8 August, Chaps 12 (13)-14 (16) 15 August. Chaps 15 (17) - 16 (18) 22 August, 17 (19)-18 (20) 29 Aug, 19 (21) - 21 (23) 5 Sept, 22 (24) - 23 (25) 12 Sept, 24 (25 cont)-25 (26) 19 Sept, 26 (27)-27 (28) 26 Sept, 28 (29)-30 (31) 3 Oct, 31 (31 cont)-33 10 Oct, 33 (cont)-35 17 Oct, 35 (cont)-37 24 Oct, 37 (cont)-39 31 Oct, 40-41 7 Nov [no instalment] 14 Nov, 42-44 21 Nov, 45-46 28 Nov, 47-48 5 Dec, 49-50 12 Dec, 51-52 19 Dec, 53-56 26 Dec, 57-59. The different chapter numbers in some cases are due to textual alterations Hardy made for the book publication. Chapters 10 & 11 (the seduction scene) appeared as "Saturday Night in Arcady" in the _National Observer_(Edinburgh) on 14 Nov. 91. The episode in which Tess baptises her baby was published as "The Midnight Baptism, A Study in Christianity" in the _Fortnightly Review_ in May 91--before (!) the novel began to be serialised in the _Graphic_. Hope this helps Birgit ==========
