HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H01066 7/23/01 "PLAGIARISM OF HARDY POEM QUESTION" ======================================================================== From: erb@segr.demon.co.uk (Roy Buckle) Subject: Plagiarism Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 15:37:06 GMT Dear Listers I don't know whether this has already been pointed out but it seems to me to be worth knowing about among the Hardy enthusiasts in TTHA and TTHS. On the latest version of the 'Thomas Hardy Online Society' website (www.webuser.com/hardy) there is a section called 'Forum' with a sub-section 'General' containing a message from one David Broom and dated July 7. In it he draws attention to a CD he recently bought containing music by a singer Christy Moore on which is a song called 'So do I'. One thinks instantly of Hardy's poem 'Weathers', of course, as does Mr Broom. He points out, though, that the song also contains chunks of the Hardy poem in it, and asks if the debt to the poet should be acknowledged by the composer. For myself, I have not seen this CD or heard the music, but from what Mr Broom says the song does not appear to be described as having words adaptated from Hardy. With Mr Broom's mild protest in mind, I ask hon. members for their opinions, and particularly what if anything can be done to suppress such deplorable imitation under the cover of making music especially if it is done for the purpose of making money as well as a reputation. -- Roy Buckle www.segr-music.ne ==========t Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 01:59:24 -0400 From: Rosemarie Morgan Subject: Re: Plagiarism Thanks for this, Roy. This site (webuser-- more aptly "abuser") has a notorious reputation for error, malpractice, false information and it seems ironically apt for it to be now used as a medium for protesting unethical behaviour. See Bob Schweik's appraisal on LINKS at: http://www.fredonia.edu/hardysoc/linksone/society.htm "Webuser" or "Thomas Hardy Online Society" used to masquerade as "The Hardy Society" website until the Hardy Society and TTHA requested its withdrawal under this unauthorised name. As to plagiarism of Hardy's work I doubt much can be done apart from asking the composer to make the appropriate acknowledgements. Let us know if you plan on taking further action? And again, many thanks for bringing this matter to our attention. Cheers, Rosemarie ==========
