HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H01049 5/14/01 "VIDEO. OLD MRS. CHUNDLE" ============================================================== From: David Herrick Subject: RE: JUDE ON FILM Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 17:29:14 +0100 > My own project to film most of the short stories of Hardy ("Thomas Hardy's > TWISTS OF FATE"), in spite of much development work, still seeks a first > financing commitment, Was this what I saw on my local news (Bristol area) several years ago? They were reporting on the shooting of Old Mrs Chundle. Yes - "Old Mrs Chundle" was a Lottery funded dry-run for the series. It was primarily useful in gaining some valuable support for the project. Best wishes Michael Barry ========== From: David Herrick Subject: RE: JUDE ON FILM Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 11:49:53 +0100 > Sadly it was "several years ago" ('98 I think). Dave ========== From: "Michael Barry" Subject: Re: "Old Mrs Chundle" ON FILM Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 19:17:45 +0100 Yes, it received a few showings: mostly at regional film days, such as the Bath Film Festival. It also ran for a week commercially alongside "Shakespeare in Love" at the splendid Wellesley Cinema in Wellington. If it had been on film, it would have been a lot more acceptable for take-up. But budget was peanuts, so video it had to be. I remaindered the final copies at last year's Hardy Conference where we were presenting "The Indiscretion of an Heiress" as a two-hander. If enough people wanted a copy (ie min. 10) (@ £10) I could get more run off. Thanks for your interest. As a member of the audience I found it a most interesting production. It is one of the more substantial of the short stories not collected with the earlier volumes, and the issues raised in it of the impenetrability of class barriers, and the limited options open to well-born women at that time--apparently salvaged from the lost novel *the Poor Man and the Lady*-- were to remain integral concerns to Hardy. We are indebted to you and the rest of the company for bringing us these rarely performed works. I'm delighted to know we might make it to the Oscars yet! Anyway - 3 requests so far - and presumably all N America? Certainly I can do NTSC copies. They're a little more costly for us, but I can absorb that in the mentioned price of £10, if a batch can be ordered. However airmail to N America would have to be extra - probably £3 with packaging (we sell a fair number of videos on Vinegrowing and Winemaking, in sets of 4, to the West of the Pond, so £3 is by deduction. Certainly less than £4). And I think we'd have to use credit/debit cards as there's a currency conversion minimum of £6.50 if done at our end. I think with cards the cost of conversion to you is negligible. My vine/wine partner can handle Mastercard, Visa and American Express. But in practical terms the cost of running off 3 copies is prohibitive, so any more takers? (Sorry, this is beginning to sound like advertising now - bad netiquette!). Perhaps you can confirm your orders with me directly on perceptive.creation@talk21.com - and when/ if there are enough, I'll confirm go-ahead (or not). That will remove this brazen commerce from the Halls of Academe! (I'll raise a query on the inner character of Tess to compensate).
