These have been published over the past two decades, at various times (since at least 1973) and are excellent detailed guides to the landscape of his novels, with maps. I have Nos. 1-10, plus 12 and 13, but do not have No. 11, and The Thomas Hardy Society secretary says it is no longer available. Would anyone, by chance, have the series, and be able to tell me the subject and author of No. 11? The others are on 1.The Woodlanders, 2 & 3. Tess of the d'Urbervilles (2 on this novel); 4.The Return of the Native, 5. Under the Greenwood Tree, 6.Far from the Madding Crowd, 7.The Mayor of Casterbridge, 8. The Trumpet-Major, 9. A Pair of Blue Eyes, 10. Jude the Obscure, 12.The Well-Beloved, and 13.Desperate Remedies. I wonder whether A Laodicean might be the subject of No. 11, or possibly Two on a Tower. Any help would be enormously appreciated. Thanks. Sarah Bird Wright Sarah Bird Wright 3505 Old Gun Rd. First, why were the European and North American editions out of sync, so that the serial run began in December, 1880, in one but January, 1881, in the other. Second, why were Hardy and the *Harper's* management so displeased with Du Maurier's work that he did not get another commission from them for quite some time (in fact, Du Maurier never illustrated any of Hardy's works of fiction after *A Laodicean*)? On pp.56-7 is a short article "Inspired by the Stars," by Bryan Woods that discusses Hardy's use of astronomy in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, TWO ON A TOWER (natch), and a couple of poems, "The Comet at Yell'ham" and "At a Lunar Eclipse." The author quotes the second stanza of "The Comet at Yell'ham": It will return long years hence, when As now, its strange swift shine Will fall on Yell'ham, but not then On that sweet form of thine. These lines brought to my mind a Thomas Hardy Society conference several years ago on the Bill of Portland devoted to THE WELL-BELOVED when I stood gazing into the sky over the Chesil to see the Hale-Bopp comet, so strange and bright a celestial visitor it erased half the stars. I wish Hardy could have seen it. As on of the requirements for my paper I must get opinions from other people who have read the novel and are educated in the writings of Thomas Hardy. If anyone has read the book and has any feedback on things such as theme, tone, and characterization. I would be delighted to discuss the book. I am particulary interested in Hardy's views on the importance of setting and establishing nature as a separate character in the book. Thank you for any ideas you may have, Margaret ========== Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 15:09:13 -0700 From: Betty Cortus Subject: Re: Far From the Madding Crowd Dear Margaret, As good place to start your research I would suggest the article on that novel in the _Oxford Reader's Companion to Hardy_, ed. Norman Page, which gives you a good overview, and an accompanying bibliography. I would particularly recommend Rosemarie Morgan's book _Women and Sexuality in the Novels of Thomas Hardy_ (1999). Have you checked Professor Schweik's LINKS on the TTHA web-site? I am sure you will find some material there as well. Best Wishes, Betty Cortus ==========
