HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H01025 2/11/01 "NOTES AND QUERIES" ================================================ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 14:46:00 -0500 From: John Schmidt Subject: Too Much Mail - Need Help Hello, I'm getting a lot of general messages on my e-mail regarding Thomas Hardy. I only want to get responses from people who know something about his genealogical background. Is there some way I can limit responses to this topic? I'd appreciate your help because this type of chat experience is new to me. Sincerely, Nancy Schmidt jned@aei.ca =========== Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 13:03:00 -0800 From: Betty Cortus Subject: Re: Too Much Mail - Need Help Dear Nancy Schmidt, I see you are a new subscriber to the HARDY-L Forum. No, unfortunately you will not be able to limit the messages you receive to a single area. As it states in the material you received on joining, this list is devoted to all aspects of Thomas Hardy's life, work, and reputation. If you wish to remain a member under those circumstances I would suggest you pose some specific questions you have about Hardy's genealogy to our members, who I feel confident will have some useful information for you. Any replies will come back with the same subject heading you give it. If the subject heading is of no interest to you simply delete it. Welcome to HARDY-L Betty Cortus Director ========== From: "Tyrone" Subject: shadow on the stone Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 22:38:46 -0800 Can any one out there give me any information on this poem. i am specifically looking at whether Hardy was lookin back, as suggestive of the druid stones or was he afraid to look back to the past that was disappearing for fear of losing any memories he had of his wife. Any help would be gratefully recieved. Forgive me if I _am_ a lone voice, but I am far from sure what the main part of it means/says/asks, and even less sure what the question about an examination-setter named Patrick at the end of the posting has to do with Hardy at all. Since this list can justifiably pride itself on the admirable clarity of its speculative focus, I thought it might be worth just mentioning my puzzlement -- i.e. not so much a flame as a mild sputter, which may just be occasioned by my own end-of-week intellectual energy loss. All best wishes, Keith **** Keith Wilson Department of English, University of Ottawa 70 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1N 6N5 Telephone/Voice-Mail: (613) 562 5770; Fax: (613) 562-5990 e-mail: kgwilson@aix1.uottawa.ca ========== From: "David Clark" Subject: Thanks to Patrick Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 01:49:23 +0100 Patrick's comments are always most welcome - especially with the links he sends! Many thanks, Patrick. I've been re-reading the short stories lately, and wouldlike to know if anyone agrees with me in thinking that "Interlopers at the Knap" is, perhaps, one of Hardy's more interesting stories. know that many see it as a poorer cousin to "Fellow Townsmen", but I would love to know what group members think. Best wishes, and a good weekend to all, Dave C. ========== From: RPKOAK@aol.com Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 18:59:28 EST Subject: Re: readings of FFMC passage It seems Hardy would use these words from Gray's poem with special delight since the meaning that Hardy gives those words is quite the opposite of Gray's meaning! (Hardy 'cashed out' the new meaning in real terms in his fiction, I think.) ========== From: RPKOAK@aol.com> Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 19:32:21 EST Subject: Re: readings of FFMC passage certainly you are not alone in your puzzlement on reading a dear list- members recent message. Iam sorry your offered attention was not rewarded with clarity of expression. '...admirable clarity of ... speculative focus' is very much a delight to read Thanks for your clear, constructive observation. ========== Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 18:03:57 -0800 From: Betty Cortus Subject: Re: readings of FFMC passage Dear Subscriber, Thank you for your understanding on this matter. You are obviously familiar with Hardy's works , and have certain feelings about them. We welcome comments on our discussions from Hardy scholars, and non-academics alike. I do agree with the earlier poster, however, that it it is important to focus our remarks as succinctly as possible on the discussion in hand. Stream of consciousness thoughts and musings do have a place in literary discussions, but on a list-serve where busy people have less time time for such luxuries as in the classroom, they are probably best kept for one-on-one interaction with compatible friends. One further suggestion: Please don't forget, and his goes for all subscribers, that it is an e-courtesy for each of us to append our full name and e-mail address to every posting we send to the list. Thank You All, Betty Cortus HARDY-L Director ========== From: "P J Heseltine" Subject: brass Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 20:39:46 -0000 There is a note in the microfilms referring to Hardy's design for a memorial brass - does anyone have any further information on this subject peter heseltine ========== Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 14:17:59 -0800 From: Betty and/or John Cortus Subject: Re: brass This could refer to one of Hardy's poems "The Memorial Brass: 186--." I was the composer and the librettist David Bushrod. We are both resident in Dorset. An American academic named Fran attended the premi¸re - but flew back to the States immediately afterwards. We think the opera would be well received in New England. Brian Parkhurst ========== From: "Michael Barry" Subject: HARDY and the countryside. Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 12:54:07 -0000 As a new subscriber, I am enjoying the steady flow of insights pouring into my inbox. Thank-you, all. It may improve me! Certainly my enjoyment of Hardy. Can anyone supply me with a short (single side of A5) piece - for the general public - on the importance of nature, countryside, even wildlife to Hardy. Probably such a piece already exists? My theatre company, the Wessex Actors Company, is restaging its production of Hardy's own (second) version of Tess (unseen in Britain, I think, since 1929 until our 1993 staging). This is scheduled for this summer (July and September - August looking very empty) - in our five county constituency: Somerset, Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. 5 outdoor performances are scheduled in late July at Fyne Court, near Taunton, home of the Somerset Wildlife Trust (a charity like ourselves, who stand to profit from the performances). It would be fitting to include a programme note on Hardy and wildlife, especially if something already exists? As a charity (albeit professional) with no core funding, no money is on offer I'm afraid - but this single usage is all that is proposed. A free ticket could be available however! You may e-mail me directly on wessex.actors@talk21.com With thanks Michael Barry (Artistic Director, The Wessex Actors Company) ========== Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 18:58:57 -0800 From: Betty Cortus Subject: Re: HARDY and the countryside. Dear Michael, Welcome to the HARDY-L Forum. Your production of TESS in progress certainly sounds like an fascinating project. I gather you would like someone from the list to supply you with a brief summary of Hardy's views on the subjects you name below for inclusion in the program for your production. Would any list member be interested in writing such a piece, with the reward of a ticket to the play? This would obviously be more of interest to someone able to take advantage locally of such an opportunity. Please write to Michael Barry privately at the address below if you decide to submit an article for consideration. In the meantime the list would be most interested in hearing more about the progress of this play, and seeing a transcript of any article you might decide to use.
