HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H01005 1/2/01 "CHARLOTTE MEW AND HARDY" ==================================================== Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2001 18:35:26 -0500 From: Rosemarie Morgan Subject: Re: Charlotte Mew & Hardy Greetings all and Happy New Year! A quickie: I came across a passage yesterday, in Michael Schmidt's section on Hardy and Mew, in his *Lives of the Poets* (Vintage Books, 2000), which mentions that Charlotte Mew wrote "a novel that suggests she had a romance with Hardy" (413). We already know that TH thought highly of Mew's poetry and that she contributed to the volume dedicated to him and presented to him by Yeats and Sassoon (?I think) -- known as *The Poets' Tribute" but called, by Hardy, *The Book of the Poets* -- but can anyone throw light on this "novel," its title, publication and so on? With every good wish, Rosemarie Morgan ========== From: Martin Ray Sender: enl090@abdn.ac.uk Subject: Re: Charlotte Mew & Hardy Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 15:25:40 -0500 (EST) A very Happy New Year, Rosemarie! This sounds like a reference to the novel which Peggy Parris published two or three years ago. I forget its title, but Bob and I mentioned it at the time on this list, so there should be a record in the archives. It was concealed under "Announcements" which accounts for my delay in finding it. Bob's message is being more elusive, but this one alone might be helpful. Parris's His Arms are Full of Broken Things, which is a fictional account of the life of Charlotte Mew, the poet, and features Hardy a great deal. It will be published in paperback by Penguin at the end of April: ISBN 0-14-026271-7. I haven't read it yet so can't comment on it (not that this has always stopped me in the past....) Peggy Parris teaches English at U. of North Carolina. By a bizarre coincidence, I met her in a pub about three years ago, which is how I came to be slightly involved with the book. ========== Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 12:44:58 -0500 From: Rosemarie Morgan Subject: Re: Charlotte Mew & Hardy Thanks so much Betty! I must have missed this the first time around, despite (grin) the fact that you and I put the Forum archives on TTHA website each and every month! Appreciate your search! Besties, R ==========
