Subject: Osgood-McIlvaine Collected Edition

Dear List Members:

    I am preparing a conference paper for a spring presentation here in
Birmingham, Alabama and wonder if anyone could direct me to a listing of
the Hardy novels in proper numbered order for this particular
Collection. I know that this collection included the first book edition
of Jude and by 1897 the Well-Beloved was added as volume 17; however, I
have been unable to determine the numbering order of the other volumes.
Any advice as to location would help a lot.  Thank you so much.

	If you mean the 16-volume "Wessex Novels" (and I think you do),  then
you'll find a list with dates of publication and commentary on pp. 279-82
of Richard Little Purdy's *Thomas Hardy: A Bibliographical Study*.  All the
volumes were published in 1895 & 1896.  He lists them in this order:

		[1895]
		Tess
		Madding Crowd
		Mayor
		Blue Eyes
		Two on a Tower
		Return
		[1896]
		Woodlanders
		Jude
		Trumpet-Major
		Ethelberta
		Laodicean
		Desperate Remedies
		Wessex Tales
		Life's Little Ironies
		Noble Dames
		Greenwood Tree

	Purdy has more information about each individual title, of course.  And as
you say, *The Well-Beloved* came out later--as did *Wessex Poems* and
*Poems of the Past and the Present*--in the same format.
