HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H0097 11/10/00 "MAY O'ROURKES'S HARDY MONOGRAPH" ============================================================ Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 21:00:45 +1100 From: David Cornelius Subject: Mrs M. O'Rourke Dear All, I wonder if anyone might be able to help me with sourcing a piece of material that I have had photocopeid. The article is "Young Mr Thomas Hardy" by Mrs M. O'Rourke? I have written J. Stevens Cox, Guernsey,1966 at the top, but I have not put the title fof the book or magazine. I have a feeling it may be a 'Thomas Hardy Journal'. I would appreciate it if someone could verify this. Kind regards, David Cornelius David Cornelius 5 Caltowie Place Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia. dcorney@midcoast.com.au ========== Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 10:57:12 +0000 From: Birgit Plietzsch Subject: Re: Mrs M. O'Rourke The source is: Sephens Cox, J. (ed.). _Monographs on the Life, Times and Works of Thomas Hardy._ No. 9 (St. Peter Port, Guernsey: The Toucan Press, 1966): 7-19. On the title page of this monograph the author May O'Rourke is identified as "Hardy's Secretary". May O'Rourke also wrote another monograph titled *Thomas Hardy: His Secretary Remembers*, which is cited several times by Michael Millgate in his *Thomas Hardy: A Biography* (New York: Random House, 1982), pp. 553-555. In 1968 I interviewed her about what she could recall of Hardy's habits of composition and preparation of manuscripts during the time she was working at Max Gate.
