I've just noticed that Hardy was born exactly 100 years 
after the Marquis de Sade, to the very day.

Would we care to read anything into this?

Martin,

Yes, Howard Jacobson noted this too, and indeed based his scabrous novel,
Peeping Tom, on this very coincidence. I wouldn't include it in any your
splendid bibliographies, etc. It is v. funny though.
