HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H0049 5/23/00 "JUDE QUAOTATION QUESTION" ==================================================== From: "Stéphanie Humbert" Subject: Quotation Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 09:19:00 GMT Bonjour ! In Rosemary Sumner’s article, « Jude and Sue : the Psychological Problems of Modern Man and Woman » (« Thomas Hardy : The Tragic Novels », eduted by R. P. Draper, Casebook series, 1975, 1991, page 221), I have found the following quotation : « One point illustrating this I could not dwell upon : that, though she had children, her intimacies with Jude have never been more than occasional, even when they were living together… ». I use this quotation in my thesis and I have been looking everywhere for the source. My lecturer thought it was in the postcript to Jude, but it is not. Is this something he wrote in a letter or in a magazine ? Thanks in advance for your help ! Stéphanie Humbert. ========== From: Martin Ray Subject: Re: Quotation Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 10:42:54 -0400 (EDT) Bonjour Stéphanie! The quotation is from a letter to Edmund Gosse, dated 20 November 1895: it's in the Letters, vol. 2, p. 99. If you need a bibliographic citation, drop me a line privately.
