HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H0030 4/1/00 "APRIL 2000 ANNOUNCEMENTS". ===================================================== Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 14:31:56 -0600 From: William Morgan Subject: TTHA Poem of the Month for April Earlier today, I posted Hardy's "The Lacking Sense" as the TTHA Poem of the Month for April, 2000. This month's poem is the fourth in a series of Hardy pieces about the meaning of the natural world. You can find the TTHA Poem of the Month Discussion by following the links from the main TTHA page at http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/Welcome/welcomet.htm or by going directly to http://netforum.ilstu.edu/cgi-bin/netforum/ths/a/1/ Whichever route you take, when you arrive at the Poem of the Month discussion, you will encounter a program called NetForum which will give you the opportunity to read the poem as well as any comments it may have generated, compose a response, preview your response, edit it further if you like, and finally submit your contribution by clicking on the button labeled Post the Message. (*DON'T use the Reset Message button*; you will lose your work.) If you are composing an intricate or long response, you may want to prepare your response in a word processing program, then copy it to your clipboard before pasting it into the message area of NetForum. And if you prefer, feel free to send me your contribution as an e-mail, and I will post it for you: wwmorgan@ilstu.edu. While the discussions for February, 1998 through November 1999 have been "closed" and their contents edited and published in *The Hardy Review* [I:1 (July 1998) and 2:1 (Summer 1999)] and while the conversations from 1999 about the "Emma" poems are currently being edited for publication, the discussions of "Channel Firing" (January), "Satires of Circumstance in 15 Glimpses" (March), "After the Visit" and "To Meet, or Otherwise" (May), "A Singer Asleep" (July), "Nature's Questioning" (January), "The Mother Mourns" (February), and "The Subalterns" (March) are still open, and your contributions are invited. Welcome to the April 2000 TTHA Poem of the Month Discussion. cheers, Bill Morgan ========== From: "Marcus Barrett" Subject: Weymouth - Hardy Summer School 2000 Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 15:15:12 +0100 Dear Hardyans, Κ If you enjoy the cut & thrust of debate about Hardy which this forum enables, you may be interested to know about a three-day summer school being held at Weymouth College, Dorset, UK, from Monday 31st July-Wednesday 2nd August 2000 (the week following the UK Hardy Society Conference). Κ The Weymouth summer school is aimed at students of VIth Form(17-19yrs) and Undergraduate level, and includes a variety of lively guest seminars, tours and talks which take the study of many Hardy poems, some of the novels and short stories beyond class and out to many places in Dorset. Hardy scholars of international standing have kindly agreed to take part in an exciting programme and we have the active support of the Hardy Society. Κ The course costs £40 excluding food & accommodation (which students should arrange themselves but with which we will help by providing local contacts). Further details can be obtained >from me by e-mail (below); posters are available should you wish to put them up at any appropriate places. Κ Weymouth is a splendid place to be in the summer - what better than to mix a stay there with the chance to explore Hardy's work in its physical context. Κ Kind regards, Κ Marcus Κ ---------------- Marcus Barrett English Dept Weymouth College Dorset, UK (01305) 208842 mmb@barrett.supanet.com ========== Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 13:33:32 -0700 From: Betty Cortus Subject: New _Oxford Companion_ Dear List Members, I'm pleased to announce that the _Oxford Reader's Companion to Hardy_, edited by Norman Page and published by Oxford University Press, is now in print and available for purchase. Nov: 1917." Dear Hardy-l listmembers: ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚA few months back, I announced on this listserv the Thomas Hardy Association's appeal for funds to purchase Florence Hardy's copy of the first edition of *Moments of Vision*, inscribed to her by Hardy as above.Κ (I reproduce that first message below.)Κ I write now to give you an update on the project and to send out something of an alarm: we have received contributions of $2500, exactly 1/3 of the total we need to raise by July 1.Κ ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚThe Hardy Society (UK) will be distributing a second flyer along with the May issue of its *Journal*, and the Hardy Society of Japan will be inviting its members to contribute in their April mailing.Κ But I have to admit that I'm getting worried as the deadline approaches.Κ If you have been meaning to make a contribution, please do (before the school term ends and the matter slips your mind); if you know someone who might be interested in contributing, please spread the word.Κ It still seems to me a shame to let this extraordinary book go up at auction.Κ ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚHere are just a few samples of the kinds of comments I've received in notes accompanying the contributions: ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚ“If >people like us don’t do this kind of thing, who will?” “I entirely agree that items like this one have a special appropriateness for the DCM collection.” “I do hope this marvellous copy can be secured for the Memorial Collection.”Κ ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚ“This is just the kind of thing the Hardy Society and Hardy Association need to be doing.” For more information about the appeal, see: ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚhttp://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/fundrais.htm And of course you should feel free to contact me for more information.Κ ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚcheers, ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚBill Morgan ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚExecutive Vice President ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚThe Thomas Hardy Association ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚwwmorgan@ilstu.edu [My earlier message] Dear Victoria listmembers: ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚ The Thomas Hardy Association has been presented with a remarkable opportunity to make a significant contribution to the Hardy Memorial Collection at the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester (Hardy's Casterbridge): the owners of Florence Hardy's copy of *Moments of Vision*, beautifully inscribed to her in Hardy's hand (as above), have agreed to sell it to TTHA for presentation to the Hardy Memorial Collection if we can raise $7500 by July 1, 2000.Κ If we do not raise the money, they will probably put the book up for auction. ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚ The staff at the Dorset County Museum, the Board of Directors of the TTHA, and many other Hardy enthusiasts with whom I have spoken agree with me that this book belongs on public view at the DCM alongside its many other pieces of Hardy memorabilia.ΚΚ For that reason, I have been pleased to become the TTHA project manager for this fund-raising appeal.Κ I hope I might persuade some of you to contribute--or at least to help publicize the project by mentioning it to anyone you think might be interested. ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚ If you want more details feel free to contact me.Κ And I hope that you will have a look at the flyer announcing the project, available on the News Update page at the TTHA website ΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚΚ http://www.yale.edu/hardysoc/fundrais.htm It would be a shame if we lost this opportunity to purchase this very special book for public display in the museum that houses the finest Hardy collection in the world. We now have a wealth of Hardy-related material available in the Archives, and I encourage you to take advantage of this updated system for retrieving information. I guess this week on TTHA should be entitled "BIRGIT WEEK"! First she designs the electronic/interactive "TTHA Book Order Form," then the "Forum Archives Order Form" and now, the latest, a "TTHA Membership Form." Uploaded today! (We have even plotted a "Person Interactive" form for the shy or recalcitrant!) So, aside from these feats, for which we are truly thankful, is there anything more that whizzkid Birgit can get up to (any suggestions?) before she gets caged as a protected species? Cheers, Rosemarie Morgan ==========
