HARDY FORUM ARCHIVE H0027 3/4/00 "HARDY SET TO MUSIC". =============================================== Date: Sat, 04 Mar 2000 09:23:31 -0600 From: Bill Morgan Subject: Musical Settings of Two Hardy Poems Dear Hardy list, I've just received notice of two new musical settings of Hardy poems, and I thought that, since the Musical Settings division of the Hardy Poetry Page is still idle, I would pass along the information to the full list. The settings (by Professor Lanny Pollet of the School of Music at the University of Victoria, BC) are for SATB choir and were released this week by Cantus Quercus Press under the title "Two Poems of Reminiscence by Thomas Hardy." The catalog reference number is CQ2002. Some handsome sample pages may be viewed on line at "http://cantusquercus.com/pollcat.htm" Enjoy, Bill Morgan ========== Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 16:54:02 -0500 From: Shannon Rogers Subject: Hardy Music Question Here's a possibly dumb one for all of you. I returned from class yesterday, flush with joy from getting to teach _Tess_ , for the first time, in a history class (and having it go really well). In my mail was the monthly catalogue offering from the Musical Heritage Society and, among the selections is something entitled "Songs of Thomas Hardy's Wessex". The description reads "The Mellstock Band in music mentioned in Hardy's novels". There is no more information, other than it is recorded in DDD and lasts 67:10. Does anyone know anything about this? I like to play music as part of my classes, to give students a feel for the culture of the time. If this is something reasonably authentic it would be great, but I don't want to buy it and have it turn out to be cheesy. Any help is greatly appreciated! I have often used bits of their recordings in Hardy classes, and the students greatly enjoy it (some of them even enjoy the music, but I suspect not as many as enjoy the idea of the authenticity). ***** Keith Wilson Department of English, University of Ottawa 70 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1N 6N5 Telephone/Voice-Mail: (613) 562 5770; Fax: (613) 562-5990 e-mail: kgwilson@aix1.uottawa.ca ========== Date: Mon, 03 Apr 2000 09:43:50 -0400 From: Shannon Rogers Subject: Re: Hardy Music Question Keith, Thanks so much for the feedback. Based on your advice (oh, the pressure!), I'm going to order this CD. Since you've student-tested other recordings, that's a ringing endorsement to me. Best, Shannon Rogers ==========
